I have asked each of the counselors to put together a personal post. While everyone has resume information available on our website, I wanted each of them to allow a peek into why they chose this profession. Every member of the team is carefully chosen because of the heart they have for others, so I am hoping this will allow readers to appreciate each member of the team as much as I do.
My journey to become a counselor was due to my passion for helping others to be able to discover their own worth, value, and identity as a person and to make changes in themselves they. seek for a better way of life. Along this journey, I have worked with adults, adolescents, and children. At some point, I received an opportunity to explore the wonderful world of Play Therapy. I had the opportunity to study under Dr. Garry Landreth at the University of North Texas Center for Play Therapy at Denton. I am an RPT (Registered Play Therapist). Being an RPT lets me work with children to overcome problems ranging from minor adjustments in life due to changes in their lives. I also work with children who have been victims of trauma. Play helps a child to overcome different problems by teaching them an emotional language to communicate with their words. It also facilitates self-esteem, decision making, and through limit setting teaches them to take responsibility for their decisions.
I was married for 26 years and I have four children, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and expecting another great grandchild very soon. I have two dogs: “Monster” (a Yorkie Mix) and “Ginger” (a Chiweenie).
On a personal note, I would like to share some of my favorite things. Besides “Raindrops on Roses”, I enjoy traveling with my oldest daughter and her family. In 2017, my one of my grandsons decided to get married and have his wedding on the mountainside in Estes Park, Colorado. In 2018, we made a trip to Hawaii. It was the farthest I had ever been beyond East Texas. We spent 10 days on the beautiful island of Oahu. We spent some quality time on the beach. We also toured the Dole Pineapple Plantation, where they grow pineapples, coconuts, coffee, and bananas. We spent one day at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. We also attended an authentic Luau, at the Waimea Valley Community Center where we engaged in live cultural demonstrations of crafts, dancing, cooking, entertainment, and a sampling of cooking Polynesian style. We also visited the historic Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
I have lots of hobbies, but some of my favorite ones are Oil Painting, Flower Arrangements, Herb Gardening, Fairy Gardening, and cooking and eating all kinds of ethnic dishes. I especially love Mexican Cuisine, dark chocolate, the colors blue and purple, reading, watching very old movies, dancing in the rain, online shopping, jigsaw puzzles, and wearing big hats.
